Understanding the 75th Percentile Rule in JCAT

The Joint Centralized Admission Test (JCAT) is used for admission to postgraduate programs such as MS, MD, and MDS. According to the new notification, the result will now be declared in percentiles, similar to the FCPS Part-I Test. To qualify, candidates must achieve at least the 75th percentile.

What Does Percentile Mean?

A percentile shows how well you performed compared to other candidates.
For example, being in the 75th percentile means you scored better than 75% of the candidates who took the exam.

Important Point

In this system, passing does not depend only on marks. Even a candidate with high marks can fail if many other candidates scored higher.

Example Dataset
Student Obtained Marks (out of 100) Rank Percentile Result
Student A 92 1 99 Pass
Student B 90 2 97 Pass
Student C 88 3 95 Pass
Student D 85 4 90 Pass
Student E 82 5 84 Pass
Student F 78 6 76 Pass
Student G 77 7 73 Fail
Student H 74 8 69 Fail
Student I 72 9 60 Fail
Student J 68 10 50 Fail
Key Observation

Notice Student G scored 77 marks, which is more than 75, but still failed because the percentile is 73, which is below the required 75th percentile. This example shows that under the new system, marks alone do not determine success. What matters is your relative performance compared to other candidates.
